VMWare vs Virtualbox Benchmark (July 2020)

In this post I will be benchmarking VMWare Workstation 15 vs Virtualbox 6.1.

Traditionally I have personally used Virtualbox when needing to run a virtualized Linux environment under Windows.

However due to a few recent issues I have had with my Virtualbox development environment (browser crashing with some sites, occasional sub-par UI performance, crashing host applications when using copy&paste from guest) — I decided it was time to take a look at VMWare Workstation.

People often suggest that VMWare offers superior performance, however I never actually benchmarked the two… until now!

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (focal) was used as the guest OS, with Windows 10 as the host.

The two tools being used for the benchmark are nench and kcbench.

Conclusion

VMWare appears to offer superior performance in all areas. In addition to this I have noticed VMWare offers a much smoother desktop experience through its improved graphics performance.

Personally I will now likely be using VMWare when needing a Linux environment under a Windows host.

Feel free to let me know which one you prefer and why 🙂

Thanks for the Article. I personally always had the same feeling, that VMWare Workstation on WIn10 is performing always better than Virtualbox, but I couldn´t find any benchmark.
Thanks for this tests.
